Fishing Fridays Drop-Off Program ($50 per child for 5 classes)

Fridays April 10, 17, 24, May 1 and May 8 Grades 2-5

4:30-6pm

Beginner fisherfolk can join us for fun with fins! Learn about the parts of different types of fishing rods, identify different types of freshwater fish, what baits to use with which fish, try your hand at tying flies, and cast a line in the creek whenever the weather cooperates. One session may take place at Rochester Municipal Park, date to be determined.

We’ll discuss the only flying mammals in the world– 1,500 species of bats– including the 9 local bats found in Michigan, and their relatives everywhere except Antarctica. We’ll use night vision binoculars and an echometer touch to both see and hear bats in the woods.

For 2026, we're turning Lost Lake Nature Park into a different habitat each month. Travel the world without setting foot on an airplane or ship as we transport you to wonderful places. Each open houses includes an awesome craft, outside games and inside models and biofacts to immerse yourself in another place. Every world traveler needs a passport, so we'll be providing each visitor a passport booklet that you can get stamped with each open house you attend. Show us your passport at the December open house to receive a special prize.

Meander along our trails and stop at our River Day stations to discover what our waterways do for us, and how we can help them. Discover how Trout Unlimited creates fish habitat in the creek. Visit the Rochester Pollinators to learn about the role of native plants along the river. Take part in the 60-second invasive species removal challenge. Bring water shoes (or borrow ours) to get in the water and dip net for macroinvertebrates, try your hand at water quality testing, and create a Gyotaku fish print.

Oxford Virtual Academy - Animals from Head to Tail! (26 Aug 2026)

Exploring the natural science of biology, we will look at different body parts and body systems of living things. We will learn about what parts make up our bodies and those of other animals, designing our own animal piece by piece throughout the modules. From inside to outside and nose to toes, we'll explore how animals are suited to their environments through observation of living animals and taxidermy. We'll play games using our senses in the ways other animals do, assemble models to show how organs work, and discuss animals who have other ways of using the same parts.

Meets on Wednesday weekly.
